Air Routes: High-tech business connections are in high demand in the Far East. That’s why EVA Air is launching nonstop service from Taipei to Mumbai December 10. There will be a trio of weekly departures on the route. EVA will field 747-400s on the route. The craft are fitted for four classes of service. Perhaps the best buy is Evergreen Deluxe. Lots of room at a decidedly decent price…Quick, name a hotter market than China. We’re waiting. Korean Air has almost doubled the number of seats it flies to Shanghai and Beijing. Where there were 10 weekly departures to Shanghai, there are now 21; and where there were eight weekly Beijing departures, there are now 14…There are pockets of Iraq where a semblance of sanity prevails, and one of them is in Erbril, in the Kurdish-controlled north of that war-ravaged land. There’s a demand for seats to the place, and so it is that Austrian Airlines intends to launch twice-weekly Vienna-Erbril service December 11. An A319 will make the trip Mondays and Fridays…Air Malta begins flying twice weekly (Mondays and Thursdays) ‘twixt Liverpool and the Mediterranean island next May.
Airlines: This is significant. The carrier that brought you the modern “enclave” style business class setup, British Airways, just rolled out a new Club World product. The new Club World bed is 25 percent wider than before, and incorporates a new “Z” position—perfect for watching movies. Privacy screens are electrically operated, and there’s a laptop locker for your computer. It’s the little things that count, and BA pays close attention. Consider: There’s a standard 110v US-style in-seat power socket that needs only a UK/US adaptor to work. As for in-flight entertainment, the new setup allows you to pause, stop, fast-forward or rewind up to 100 films and television programs. The screens on which you view the fare are larger too—10-inch digitals. Want to nosh at 35,000 feet? An onboard Club Kitchen serves up hot and cold snacks in between meals. Perhaps best of all, there are about to be more Club World accommodations aloft. BA makes lots of bucks out of Business Class, that’s why it’s increasing the number of “C” Class seats in some of its 747s from 38 to 52.
Airports: Frequent flyers crave uniformity. If people are going to impose a measure, just make sure they do it uniformly so nobody’s confused—especially when it comes to security. That’s why new European Union regulations regarding carry-ons are so significant. From now on, you’ll have to pack liquids in a one-liter, see-through plastic bag before you can board with them. Each of those liquids—toothpaste, mouthwash, creams and the like—have to come in containers that are no more than 100 ml (3.5 fluid ounces). Now, there is—at least in theory—a harmonization of carry-on rules in the European Union, United States and Canada. One more thing they don’t tell you about. Make sure that the plastic bag you stick your toiletries in is separate from your carry-on. When clearing security, don’t stick it inside the bag, as some folks do. That just slows things down...Airport switch in Moscow. Austrian Airlines is set to move from Sheremetyevo to Domodedovo in February. There, it joins Star Alliance buddies bmi, Swiss, Thai and Singapore.
