Map of Southwest

Air Routes: Flyers in the Valley of the Sun will soon have a direct shot at Delta’s transatlantic connections out of New York Kennedy. The carrier plans to launch nonstop once-daily 737-800 service from Phoenix Sky Harbor International to JFK beginning February 25, 2007. The timing is perfect for connections to the carrier’s evening bank of transatlantic departures…You’ve got to wonder why this route took so long. Southwest intends to inaugurate twice-daily nonstop service from Dallas Love Field to Birmingham March 11. While the now dead Wright Amendment stopped direct service via full-size aircraft to some cities from DAL, Birmingham wasn’t among them. Southwest’s been able to fly the route—on a nonstop basis—for years. Now, it’s elected to exercise that option. American currently offers the only nonstop flights between the Dallas Fort-Worth Metroplex and BHM, and it does so out of DFW…Southwest lays on a seventh daily Albuquerque-Las Vegas nonstop March 11, as well as a sixth-daily Tucson-Los Angeles flight.

Airports: In this case, dogs really may be man’s best friend. Amidst all the high-tech explosives gear at Bush Houston Intercontinental, don’t be surprised to see Tomy rooting around. The 3-year-old Belgian Malinois and his human handler, Officer A. Parker, join Bak and his master, Officer Carlos Perez, at Continental’s prime hub.

Here’s a sorely needed route. Aeromexico plans to launch nonstop Austin-Mexico City service December 15. There will be a quartet of weekly departures: Sunday, Monday, Thursday and Friday. Right now, flyers have to connect over Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston or San Antonio to make the trip to the Federal District…There’s a new tail on the tarmac at Houston Bush Intercontinental. The logo you’ll recognize, but perhaps not the airplane (at least not this variant). Lufthansa is flying new A340-600s on the IAH-Frankfurt run now. The airplane boosts the number of seats the German flag carrier offers on the run by 30 percent.
